Cats tuneup for district with rout

LOVINGTON — Clovis High’s baseball team is ready to step into District 2-6A play.

The Wildcats played their final non-district contest on Tuesday and improved to 11-5 for the season with a 10-0 win over Lovington.

Junior Jace Piepkorn pitched three innings for the win in his first mound action of the spring, with junior Sebastian Nunez finishing up the three-hitter.

The Cats scored twice in the first inning, then made it 8-0 with a six-run fourth highlighted by a two-run single from senior Chris Encinias.

“We came in today with a good approach at the plate,” CHS coach Richard Cruce said. “We had chances to score in every inning, but we played real good baseball today.”

Lovington (3-10) committed four errors in the game, including two during the big fourth inning. The Cats finished with 12 hits, including two each for Piepkorn, Encinias and sophomore Garrett Langrell.

Clovis will host Eldorado in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at Bell Park, the first of five consecutive Saturday twin bills in district play.

Cruce said the Cats haven’t faced the Eagles in his three seasons as the coach.

“We talk about (having) three seasons in a year,” he said. “The first one is over, and we’ve got to get ready for season 2.

“We’ll have to match their intensity. We’ve got to take care of our home field and then go on the road and split at the worst.”
