Come have some fun at the Ag Expo

As I’m sure we’ve covered before, a good reason to get off the tractor and go somewhere is always appreciated — and the most rare is that sort of opportunity when it isn’t due to something breaking down and requiring a trip to town for parts.

The county fair, the annual board meeting of the bank that lets you borrow the money to keep farming, the annual meeting of the power coop that gets quite a bit of that money, the cousin’s graduation that only happens once … There’s a short list of not-often events, but one of the big ones has got to be the farm shows.

There’s the one far away that doesn’t always get attended, and then there’s the one close to home that is so convenient as to be the best.

In this particular county, what I’m referring to is the Ag Expo and I’d better be seeing you there.

Climb on the new tractors and dream about working in such a clean cab with all the spaceship-like controls and A/C that actually works. I’m captain of the field in my mind in those things.

You can admire grain carts that haven’t yet smelled like rotten grain, flatbed trailers that don’t have even a scratch on the paint, and cattle trailers that are still the color they were painted, not the shades of green that the cattle brush and squirt all over the floor, the roof, and the walls.

There are booths and peanuts and candy and hopefully yardsticks to carry around. But the best part is the people that you’ll run into or that track you down.

When I was closer to a yardstick in height, I’d wait for what seemed like hours for my dad to talk to someone about something. I didn’t quite understand the allure of a good conversation, but now it makes all the sense in the world you’ll find me doing the same thing.

People you know, people you ought to know, people you’ll get to know anyway, and people that you probably do know, but for some reason, you just can’t quite remember.

So, come out to the Ag Expo and see the shiny equipment, talk to the interesting people, and take a day off to have some fun.
