ROSWELL — Junior Tomas Gallegos pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the seventh on Thursday afternoon as Clovis High’s baseball team edged Lovington 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the Roswell Invitational.
Junior Sebastian Nunez scored one run and drove in two, putting the Wildcats (4-2) ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single.
Junior Kayden Shober pitched four innings before giving way to sophomore Anthony Montoya, who went two innings for the win and then left with the bases loaded in the seventh. Gallegos got the first hitter he faced on strikes, then got the next hitter on strikes and junior catcher Jace Piepkorn picked the runner off at third base on the play to end it.
Lovington (1-3) scored single runs in each of the first two innings.
Clovis will face Roswell in a 7 p.m. semifinal today. The Coyotes defeated St. Michael's 6-1 in the last quarterfinal of the day on Thursday. Earlier, Roswell Goddard downed Ruidoso 13-1 and Del Norte edged Taos 5-3.
The championship game of the eight-team tournament is on tap for 7 p.m. on Saturday.
