ALAMOSA, Colo. — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s and women’s squads each finished fifth in the Lone Star Conference Championships, hosted over the weekend by Adams State.
The ENMU men concluded with a team score of 69 while the women finished at 53. Team champions were Texas A&M-Commerce for the men with 210 points and West Texas A&M for the women with 159 1/2.
“We had a strong weekend,” ENMU coach Danielle Kcholi said. “Both the men and women had their best finish. We had the most individual champions and medalists.
“Our men improved tremendously from last season, increasing their score from 20 to 69. We are definitely moving in the right direction and we will focus on the indoor national championship coming up in a few weeks.”
ENMU won five events in the meet. Freshman Marcus Parker became the first ENMU athlete to win any sprint event during the NCAA era after he ran a time of 21.46 seconds in the 200, becoming an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II nationals March 10-11 at Birmingham, Alabama. His time broke the LSC and Adams State facility record, and he currently has the top time this spring in Division II.
Parker added a fifth-place finish in the 60 with a time of 6.82 to become a provisional qualifier.
For the women, Melina Gryschka dominated the distance events, winning the mile in 5 minutes, 16.89 seconds and the 3,000 in 10:49.02, while Klaudia Szych won the 800 in 2:19.18 In addition, the distance medley relay team of Kandace Miles, Sierra Quinones, Szych and Gryschka won their event in 12:53.05.
The Greyhounds also notched six top-three men’s finishes, including Omer Almog, 4:30.79 for second in the mile and 15.48.77 for third in the 5,000; Kenneth Loyd, 6-8 3/4 for second in high jump; Gus Swanson, 49.33 for third in the 400; the 1,600 relay team of Travonne Armstead, Avery Rasher, Julian Coronado and Swanson, second in 3:20.60, and the distance medley relay team of Tito Chaidez, Ivar Moinat, Benjamin Lantz and Marcel Skalecki, third at 11:09.26.
