1987: Snow blanketed the region, from Quay County to Portales, Melrose and Texico.

Before the storm ended, some areas received more than a foot of snow.

Curry County Grain in Grier reported 10 inches of snow. Portales received seven inches.

Drifts 4-foot high were reported at Ragland in Quay County.

1977: Clovis High School snapped Eldorado’s 52-game winning streak to take the Class 4A girls’ state basketball title.

Clovis beat Eldorado, 51-45.

Playmaker Margie Martinez and leading scorer Renay Jordan, both seniors, led the Wildcat girls.

Jordan scored 15 points, while sophomore Julie Perich had 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

“We were more aggressive defensively and in rebounding,” Clovis coach George Ross said.

“They beat us on the boards and we couldn’t adjust to it,” said Eldorado coach Steve Silverberg.

The game marked the third time in four years Clovis played for the state championship. It was Clovis’ first girls’ state basketball title as a member of the New Mexico Activities Association. It would not win again until 1991.
