ENMU ROUNDUP: Hounds improve to 6-0 with 10-1 rout

ATLANTA — The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team continued to breeze through the early portion of its schedule on Saturday, blowing out Clark Atlantic 10-1 in the second game of a four-day, six-game stop in the Peach City.

Right-hander Scott Klein (2-0) allowed three hits over six innings, striking out seven. Texico alum Jarron Hill went two innings, striking out four of the six batters he faced, while Blake Frye pitched the ninth.

ENMU (6-0), which has outscored its first six opponents 86-14, is slated for doubleheaders today against Morehouse College and on Monday against Tuskegee, starting at noon and 11 a.m. (MST), respectively, before opening its home slate with a 2 p.m. start on Feb. 21 against Wayland Baptist.

Centerfielder Malcolm Smith led an 11-hit attack for the Greyhounds (6-0), going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base, while second baseman Alex DeLaCruz was 2-for-5 with an RBI, three runs scored, a walk and two stolen bases.

ENMU put up the first two of five two-spots in the opening two frames. Eight of the Hounds’ runs scored via something other than a hit.

Anthony Nettles (0-1) took the loss for Clark Atlanta (1-2), allowing six runs (five earned) over five innings The Panthers’ lone run came in the second against Klein when Jamari Randle singled to center to drive in Jason Howell.

ENMU softball — After scoring 22 runs in a pair of easy wins on Friday in the North Texas Bash at Grand Prairie, the Hounds (3-7) found the sledding a little tougher on Saturday, losing to Oklahoma Panhandle State 6-1 and Oklahoma Christian 3-0.

In the early contest, OPSU third baseman Anyssa Barbosa drove in four runs — including a tie-breaking, three-run double in the fifth — and Emily Worley went the distance in the circle on a three-hitter.

Barbosa hit an RBI single for OPSU in the bottom of the first, but ENMU catcher Courtney Vigil doubled home Kamalani Peneku in the second to tie it.

The Aggies (6-3) then chased ENMU starter Kiana Zerr (0-2) with a five-run fifth, highlighted by Vigil’s double to left-center. Barbosa later scored on a bases-loaded walk, and the final run came on a groundout.

Barbosa finished 2-for-2 with two walks for the Aggies, who totaled eight hits. Kylee Keller collected ENMU’s other two hits, both singles.

In the second game, Oklahoma Christian’s Kaylie Upton (2-0) scattered six hits over six innings and the Lady Eagles (6-4) did just enough damage early to pick up the win.

ENMU freshman Kaylee Rogers (2-3) went the distance in the loss, allowing eight hits with three walks and one strikeout. Oklahoma Christian scored on Rogers’ throwing error and added two more in the fourth on a squeeze bunt by right fielder Kayla Eichler and an RBI single up the middle by Upton.

Both teams stranded nine runners. ENMU’s best scoring chance came in the sixth inning, but Upton escaped a second-and-third, one out situation by getting catcher Samantha Brockman on a groundout and left fielder Cameron Conrad on a fly ball.

Upton was one of three Lady Eagles with a pair of hits, while Brockman finished 2-for-3 for ENMU.

ENMU finishes the event with a 9 a.m. clash today against Colorado Christian. The teams split a neutral-field doubleheader on Tuesday at Lubbock.
