PLAINVIEW, Texas — Wayland Baptist used a 13-0 second-quarter run to take control and the Flying Queens went on to a 63-49 victory over Eastern New Mexico University in women’s basketball on Friday night.
Wayland Baptist (2-0) trailed 15-12 when reserve Deborah Van Dijk’s jump shot got the run started at the 6:26 mark of the period. By the time ENMU’s Amari Dennis scored with 1:50 left in the period, the Flying Queens had opened a double-digit cushion.
It was 25-19 at halftime. Wayland scored the first three baskets of the second half to restore a double-digit margin, but the Greyhounds (1-2) rallied back and closed to 46-45 early in the final quarter on a layup by Daeshi McCants.
Wayland’s Shayla Monreal, though, countered with two free throws on the next trip, Jade Jones added a jumper and Maci Merket followed with a 3-pointer for an eight-point margin. Kassandra Harris scored for ENMU on the next trip, but the Hounds were limited to two free throws over the final six minutes.
Van Dijk led the Flying Queens with 18 points, while Merket added four 3-pointers and 16 points and Jones contributed a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds.
ENMU was led by Harris with 13 points. The Hounds shot just under 30 percent for the game (18-of-61) and were 5-of-23 from 3-point range.
ENMU faces New Mexico Highland on Tuesday in a 6 p.m. start at Greyhound Arena.
ENMU men’s games moved — Due to the Lone Star Conference volleyball tournament hosted this weekend by Angelo State, the Rams have pushed back their two-day, four-team classic, originally set to begin on Friday. ENMU’s men will now play Howard Payne at 5 p.m. (MST) today and Huston-Tillotson at noon (MST) on Sunday.
