Coronado tops Clovis girls

STAFF REPORT

LUBBOCK — Things went OK for a quarter on Friday night before Clovis High’s girls found themselves playing from behind.

The Lady Wildcats led most of the way against Lubbock Coronado through the opening eight minutes, but the Lady Mustangs took control in the second period and posted a 52-42 victory in the season opener for Clovis.

Foul trouble caught up to the Lady Cats in the second quarter and they were outscored by Coronado 11-4, putting themselves in an eight-point hole at the break.

“That one quarter killed us,” CHS coach Jeff Reedsaid. “We got into a lot of foul trouble, and they were shooting the 1-and-1 for a lot of the game.”

He said Coronado has already played a number of games, and thought that made a difference.

“If we would’ve had some games under our belt, we might’ve had a chance,” Reed said. “But we’re young, and we made a lot of mistakes.”

Coronado won the game from the free throw line, sinking 18-of-31 attempts to just 5-of-11 for the Lady Cats.

Sophomore post Ayana Segrest led the Lady Mustangs with 18 points, while junior guard Zoey Garcia added 11. They combined to go 12-for-19 from the free throw line.

The Lady Cats got 15 points from junior guard Teya Morris and 11 from junior guard Hayley Kidd, who made three of the team’s seven 3-point baskets. Morris and senior Monay Phillips each had a pair.

The Lady Cats are idle until hosting a four-team shootout Dec. 2-3 at Rock Staubus Gym. Clovis faces Clayton on the first night and St. Michael’s on the second, with both games slated to begin at 7 p.m.
