Tool store coming to former Hastings

Need tools to take on life’s challenges? Eastern New Mexico is about to have more options.

Harbor Freight Tools, which has more than 700 stores nationwide, will soon add Clovis to its long list of locations.

The Harbor Freight Tools website confirms the business will be at 1925 N. Prince St. — which once belonged to Hastings until the company's nationwide closing last month — and will be open seven days a week.

Signs are hung outside the empty building, indicating the arrival.

Harbor Freight Tools representatives could not be reached for comment, but a message from the company’s Facebook page reports the store is slated to open Dec. 27.

As its name would imply, Harbor Freight Tools offers a wide array of tools — including hand, automotive, air and power tools — as well as generators, engines and storage.

According to a letter to customers from Chief Executive Officer and President Eric Smidt posted on the store’s website, Harbor Freight Tools opens a new location roughly every three days.

Plateau joins scholarship program

Plateau has joined the Foundation for Rural Service in a program awarding scholarships to qualified rural students of eastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle, according to a press release from Plateau.

In late spring 2017, the scholarships will be rewarded per geographic region of the NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association — in proportion to the number of applications received from each region — and to a student sponsored by an NTCA associate member.

The FRS will fund $2,000 for each scholarship, with the sponsoring organization of each winning student matching $500.

Other scholarships include:

• Four $5,000 Staurulakis Family Scholarships aimed toward applicants planning to major in math, science, engineering or medicine.

• Two $1,500 Telecom Management Services Scholarships.

• A $7,000 Everett Kneece Return to America Scholarship.

The deadline for applications is Feb. 1, 2017.
