MSU ousts Hounds in LSC tourney

Staff report

COMMERCE, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team hung on for as long as it could on Thursday before the roof gave way a bit.

Despite being outshot 24-5, including 16-4 on goal, it wasn’t until Midwestern State’s Destinee Williamson scored a pair of goals in a span of four minutes late in the second half that the third-seeded Mustangs nailed down a 3-0 victory over sixth-seeded ENMU in a Lone Star Conference tournament quarterfinal match.

The Mustangs (12-5-2) advanced to a 4 p.m. semifinal tilt today against second-seeded West Texas A&M (11-5-0), which had a first-round bye in the six-team event.

Junior goalkeeper Marissa Torres helped keep the Hounds (3-14-1) in it most of the way. She had 13 saves, including eight in a scoreless first half in which ENMU didn’t have a single shot on goal.

Midwestern’s Avery Lewis broke the scoring ice in the second minute of the second half, hooking a shot from right to left and past Torres into the corner of the net.

Williamson’s first goal came on a fast break where she took a pass over the top of the defense and scored. She got her other goal on a rebound shot in which MSU’s Aly Wade was credited with an assist.

MSU also finished with an 8-0 edge in corner kicks, six of them coming in the first half.
