1976: An Albuquerque man’s funeral was marred by a fight after a deputy sheriff attempted to arrest the dead man’s brother at the service, The Associated Press reported.

The deputy attempted to serve a search warrant on the brother, who was charged with possession of heroin, petty larceny and a parole violation.

Some of the dead man’s relatives and friends “started to close in on the deputy,” AP reported.

The deputy ran to his car and allegedly struck an Albuquerque woman as he attempted to leave the services. The woman was hospitalized with leg and arm injuries.

The dead man’s brother was treated for a head wound at a local hospital, and then arrested on the warrants.

1961: Roscoe Karl “Rock” Staubus was elected to the New Mexico Education Association’s Hall of Fame.

Staubus was a coach and teacher at Clovis High School from 1924 until he suffered a heart attack in 1949. He died four months later at age 51.

The CHS gym is named in Staubus’ honor.

1941: Portales police were looking for a car thief.

Officials said someone broke into the city’s Dodge and Plymouth dealership overnight, took the tags off of a used car, placed them on a new Plymouth sedan, and drove away.

The tag number was 28-381.
