ENMU ROUNDUP: Hounds place second, fourth in LSC meet

COMMERCE, Texas — Junior Mercy Rotich and sophomore Melina Gryschka finished second and third, respectively, to lead Eastern New Mexico University’s women to a second-place team finish in Saturday’s Lone Star Conference cross country championships.

Rotich ran a time of 5 minutes, 56.0 seconds over the 6K course, trailing only West Texas A&M freshman Nikolina Hrelec (5:54.5), while Gryschka came in at 6:00.2. Overall, the Greyhounds had four runners in the top 16.

For the second year in a row, Midwestern State edged ENMU for the team title, finishing with 51 points to 58 for the Hounds. Last year, the Mustangs had a one-point edge (70-71).

“We had a stronger team this year,” ENMU coach Danielle Kcholi said. “We had the highest individual finishes and best team score in program history.

“The good news is everyone will be back next year.”

The ENMU men were fourth with 118 points, trailing four-time champion West Texas A&M (21), Texas A&M-Commerce (80) and Tarleton State (101). The individual winner was WT junior Geoffrey Kipchumba with an 8K time of 25:07.3.

ENMU’s top finisher was sophomore Marcel Skalecki in 26:23.3. Sophomore Garrett Meyer followed in 17th place at 26:30.5.

ENMU squads return to action on Nov. 5 in the NCAA Division II South Central Region championships in Denver.

Buffs blank ENMU men: At Canyon, Texas, West Texas A&M pulled away in the final 30 minutes on Saturday to beat Eastern New Mexico University 3-0 in Heartland Conference men’s soccer.

The Buffaloes (12-3-1, 9-2-1 Heartland led 1-0 when Ivan Ulloa scored with just under 29 1/2 minutes left in the match. WT added another goal from Thomas Vickers with less than 6 1/2 minutes to play, with Ulloa getting the assist on the play.

The Buffs posted a 28-4 advantage in shots over ENMU (5-7-4, 3-6-3), including 9-3 on goal. ENMU goalkeeper James Gutierrez had six saves.

The Hounds have conference matches remaining in the regular season next week at Lubbock Christian on Tuesday and at home against WT.
