Commissioner hopes to address auditor inquiry

Staff Writer[email protected]

A Curry County commissioner hopes to gain insight into the state auditor’s recent inquiry about county affairs, according to an agenda for today’s commission meeting.

Commission Vice Chair Chet Spear wants to address County Manager Lance Pyle’s “refusal to acknowledge or respond to several emails ... requesting commissioners be provided with a letter pertaining to the state auditor’s inquiry,” according to one item on the agenda.

The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the north annex of the Clovis-Carver Library.

“Let’s just suffice it to say that this meeting could be very interesting,” Spear said via email in response to questions.

Pyle said last week that two allegations against Curry County from 2012 are being looked into by the state auditor’s office.

The issues, according to Pyle, are:

• A 2012 exchange of property between the county and Master Trim, allowing the county to expand its footprint around the county courthouse and county detention center and create flexibility for future renovations.

• A 2012-13 Community Development Block Grant, which funded the paving of portions of Curry Roads N and 11 north of 60/84 and west of Buffalo Road.

County Commissioner Wendell Bostwick said last week that the auditor’s office asked the county about the issues following complaints from Spear.

Spear has declined to say if he filed the complaints.

Pyle and County Attorney Stephen Doerr did not respond to requests for comment regarding today’s meeting.

Other items on the agenda today:

• A proclamation declaring October 2016 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month

• Presentation of a quarterly financial report.

• Presentation of August and September 2016 Curry County Events Center and Fairgrounds financial statements.

• Discussion and requested approval for the county to sponsor and provide $5,000 for a Hispanic concert in December 2016 at the Curry County Events Center.
