Weekly New Mexico fishing report — Oct. 4

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake — Fishing was fair using swim baits and senkos for smallmouth bass. We had no other reports. Fishing pressure was light.

Animas River — Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 478 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake — Fishing for all species was slow.

Brazos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes — Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice due to danger from falling trees. The lakes will not reopen in 2016.

Chama River — Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 487 cfs and 292 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using wooly buggers, night crawlers, Blue Fox spinners, Panther Martin spinners, Kastmasters, PowerBait and salmon eggs for brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

Cochiti Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Vado Lake — Fishing was fair using PowerBait and spinners for rainbow trout. Fishing was fair to good using tubes and jigs for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on kokanee snagging.

Fenton Lake — Fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, wooly buggers, PowerBait, worms and grasshoppers for trout.

Heron Lake — Fishing from the bank was slow to fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for rainbow trout. Steve Sweeten of Albuquerque caught a limit of kokanee within two hours Sept. 28. He was fishing by the west side dirt dam and using orange PowerBait. We had no other reports.

Jackson Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters — Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 16 cfs. Fishing on the Jemez was slow to fair using worms, copper John Barrs and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing on the upper Cebolla was good using San Juan worms, hoppers, copper John Barrs, elk hair caddis and worms for rainbow trout. Troy and Becca Waters of Rio Rancho fished the San Antonio last Thursday and did very well using small gold and red Buoyant spoons. Anglers also did well using small spinners, worms and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other streams in the area.

Laguna Del Campo — Fishing was fair using spinners, worms, salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.

Lake Farmington — We had no reports from anglers this week. Nonmotorized watercraft are now allowed on Lake Farmington. Fees are $50 for the season or $5 daily.

Manzano Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Navajo Lake — Fishing was fair to good using swim baits, grubs, senkos, tubes, jigs and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using swim baits, crank baits and spinner baits for northern pike. Kokanee snagging was good near the dam. We had no other reports.

San Gregorio Lake — We had no reports from anglers.

San Juan River — Stream flow as of Monday morning was 469 cfs. Fishing through the quality waters section was good using RS2s, parachute Adams, foam wing emergers, BWOs, San Juan worms and crystal flash midges. Fishing through the bait section was good using night crawlers, copper John Barrs, San Juan worms, jerk baits, spinners, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Seven Springs Brood Pond — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach — Fishing at the Central and Youth Ponds was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using homemade dough baits and worms. Fishing was slow to fair using worms for bluegill. Our only other report came from Nancy Armijo who in spite of slow fishing conditions, caught and released a largemouth bass that measured about 14 inches Sept. 29. She was fishing the south end of the Central Pond and using one half of a night crawler.

Trout Lakes — Fishing was fair using PowerBait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout.

Northeast

Charette Lakes — Fishing was slow.

Clayton Lake — Fishing was fair using worms and beef liver for catfish. Fishing was good using PowerBait and spoons for rainbow trout.

Cimarron River — Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 20 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Conchas Lake — Fishing was fair using jigs, small plastics and swim baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using liver and prepared baits for catfish. We had no other reports.

Cowles Ponds — Fishing was good using salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.

Coyote Creek — Fishing was good using small spinners, salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.

Eagle Rock Lake — Fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, worms and PowerBait for trout.

Eagle Nest Lake — Fishing for rainbow trout was fair to good using PowerBait from the bank and trolling spinners and Platte River specials tipped with PowerBait. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing for kokanee was slow. Kokanee snagging season opened October 1 and was reported as slow.

Gallinas River — Fishing was good using copper John Barrs, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Hopewell Lake — Fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.

Lake Alice — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for rainbow trout and Pistol Petes for brown trout.

Los Pinos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13 — Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Monastery Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, worms and Pistol Petes for trout.

Morphy Lake — Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes, elk hair caddis and small bead-head nymphs for trout.

Pecos River — Stream flow on Monday was 41 cfs. Trout fishing was good using wooly worms, San Juan worms, small spinners, salmon eggs and worms. Denise Gonzalez of Albuquerque caught and released a 19-inch rainbow on Oct. 2. She was fishing above the Mora campground and using salmon eggs. We had no other reports. Margarito Maestas was fishing the river below Monastery Lake Oct. 2 and caught a nice rainbow. He was using a night crawler.

Red River — Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 46 cfs. Fishing was very good using worms, salmon eggs, copper John Barrs and PowerBait for trout.

Red River City Ponds — Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms and small Kastmasters for trout.

Rio Costilla — Stream flow near Costilla on Monday morning was 11 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande — Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 220 cfs. Fishing was very good using spinners, Kastmasters, streamers, PowerBait and night crawlers for trout. Anglers using streamers in the John Dunn Bridge area also reported catching a few smallmouth bass. We had no other reports.

Rio Hondo — Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 13 cfs. Fishing was fair using worms and small bead-head nymphs for trout.

Rio Pueblo — Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 6.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Barbara River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Storrie Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Stubblefield Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake — Fishing slow to fair using small plastics on the bottom in 25 to 30 feet of water for walleye. Fishing for white bass was slow. Fishing was fair using drop shot rigs, jigs and senkos for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using stink bait and night crawlers for catfish We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the low 70s.

Winsor Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond — Fishing was slow for all species.

Bear Canyon Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using worms and tubes for largemouth bass. A few bluegill were caught by anglers using worms. We had on other reports.

Caballo Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. The main boat ramp has been closed due to extremely low water levels and required maintenance around the dam and spillway by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation.

Elephant Butte Lake — Fishing was fair using minnows and curly tail grubs for white bass. Anglers fishing with grubs also picked up a few walleye. Fishing was fair using swim baits, senkos, jigs and creature baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using liver, night crawlers, prepared baits and shad for catfish. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.

Escondida Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Gila River — Stream flow as of Monday morning was 248 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Roberts — Fishing was fair using night crawlers and homemade dough baits for catfish. Fishing was fair using salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Percha Dam — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Grande — Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.00 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake — Fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms, hoppers and PowerBait for trout.

Young Pond — Fishing was slow for all species.

Southeast

Alto Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Bataan Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River — Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 44 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no other reports.

Blue Hole Park Pond — Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Bonito Lake — Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bottomless Lakes — Fishing was slow for all species.

Brantley Lake — Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake — Fishing was fair using night crawlers and homemade dip baits for catfish.

El Rito Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eunice Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Green Meadow Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using worms and chatter baits for bass. We had no other reports.

Greene Acres Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Grindstone Reservoir — Fishing was fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Jal Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van — Fishing was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using blood baits and hot dogs.

Oasis Park Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Pecos River — Stream flow below Sumner Lake as of Monday morning was 113 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using beef liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.

Perch Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Ruidoso River — Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 8.9 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake — Fishing was good using senkos, tubes, worms and jigs for smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using worms, tubes and grubs for walleye. We had no other reports.

Sumner Lake — Fishing was fair to good using top water lures, tubes, craws, worms and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Anglers having the best luck were fishing shallow. Fishing for catfish was good using liver and worms. Fishing for walleye was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using bottom bouncer night crawler rigs and crank baits. We had no other reports.
