FRIDAY PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Foxes post win at NMMI

Staff report

ROSWELL — Junior Kreston Butterfield ran for two touchdowns and sophomore quarterback Jude Segura threw for three touchdowns on Friday night to help rally Fort Sumner past New Mexico Military 34-20.

The Foxes dominated the game statistically, posting a 17-9 edge in first downs and a 369-229 margin in total offense, but they trailed the Colts 20-14 at halftime.

Butterfield’s 1-yard plunge tied the game midway through the third quarter. Segura hit senior Brant West for a 39-yard go-ahead score with 8:50 left in the game, and Butterfield’s 10-yard TD run provided insurance.

Segura went 19-for-26 through the air for 146 yards, surviving three interceptions by the Colts. He had three TD passes, also hitting sophomores Noah Maxwell and Hunter Sparks on 3-yard scores in the second quarter.

Junior Justin Downey led Fort Sumner’s running attack with 82 yards. Meantime, West intercepted NMMI quarterback Gavin Maloney twice in the game, and the Foxes’ defense held the Colts to one second-half first down.

Farwell opens with victory — At Friona, junior running back-defensive back Miguel Vasquez rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown and intercepted two passes, returning one for a score, as Farwell posted a 35-13 victory over the host Chieftains.

Vasquez broke the scoring ice early in the second quarter with a 16-yard TD run, then made it 21-0 early in the final period with his interception return.

The Steers piled up 26 first downs and 419 yards rushing, with quarterback Heath Hadley also going over 100 yards and adding a 29-yard TD run. Juniors LeeRoy Cervantes and Ethan Stancell each added fourth-quarter scoring runs for Farwell.

Levelland roughs up Muleshoe — At Levelland, senior quarterback Nick Gerber threw for six touchdowns as the Class 4A host Lobos rolled to a 56-31 win over the Class 3A Mules.

The Mules pulled to 21-19 midway through the second quarter when senior quarterback Beto Diaz scored on a 1-yard run — his second rushing touchdown of the period. Levelland, though, made it 28-19 late in the half on Gerber’s 8-yard, fourth-and-goal touchdown pass to Kegan Dent, who was able to tap his toes inside the end zone near the pylon.

The Lobos then put it out of reach by outscoring Muleshoe 21-0 in the third quarter.

Daniel Hurn caught seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown for Levelland. Gerber finished with 302 yards through the air, and also rushed for 91 yards and two scores.

Senior Jason Florez caught 11 passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns for the Mules. Senior Mario Flores added 68 receiving yards.

Bovina game canceled — The Mustangs’ home and season opener against Boys Ranch was halted by rain and lightning late in the second quarter with Bovina leading 28-16.

Mustangs coach Hector Guevara said the teams had hoped to complete the game on Saturday, but instead it was canceled.

Bovina’s next outing will be a neutral-field matchup against Shamrock next Friday at Randall H.S. in Canyon, Texas.
