Hartsfield: Biker shorts are back

I never thought I’d see the day when one of my favorite childhood styles was trending — biker shorts. As strange as they may seem, they work for me.

Short shorts aren’t for everyone nor are the loose, baggy ones. I think the last time I wore biker shorts regularly was when I was in the second grade when it was cool to wear the lace trimmed ones underneath a pair of loose fitting cuffed jean shorts. I remember we used to put them under our skirts as well. 1990s style is in full effect in the fashion world.

But not all biker shorts are meant for layering styles. There are the athletic biker shorts that you may start seeing more and more. I remember the ones that had the neon stripes down the side. And for the daring, there’s the multi-colored and spandex shorts that anyone who grew up in the 1980s or 1990s may have worn before. These designs may be very rare to find so you might have to shop second hand vintage to snag a pair.

But there are so many different designs of biker shorts that can be shopped in stores or online now whether they’re meant for sport or play. Who’s wearing them? Household names like Kim Kardashian have been seen in them this year. Kim recently opted for a high waist spandex short paired with a body suit, overcoat and heels. Not my favorite look on her, but I get the idea.

Another very popular look is the jean biker short. This look has been very popular in menswear. A nice fitted short, like any tailored look, for the guys is nice. For the ladies I choose to keep it casual and cool and pair a fun biker short with a long T-shirt, few accessories and a favorite shoe. It’s comfortable, stylish and effortless.
