The first day of school brings a new experience for students in Roosevelt County school districts — an opportunity to improve from the previous year.

Students of the Floyd and Dora school districts returned to campus Monday for the start of the 2016-17 school year.

Kasen East, a seventh-grade student at Floyd Schools, said that seeing his friends and talking to them is exciting, but certain aspects of school make him nervous.

“I’m worried about the homework,” he said.

However, East has his favorite subject, physical education to look forward to where he can “run around and play.”

Floyd High School junior Javin Chandler said that his favorite part of the first day of school is “getting reacquainted with all my friends that I haven’t seen for the whole summer.”

Another prospect of returning to school that excites Chandler is the opportunity to study judging in the agriculture program, because his judging team won state last year.

Two particular subjects make Chandler nervous this year.

“I would say I’m nervous about maybe my math class or my history class. The math would be algebra two, and it’s more challenging than I’ve had in the past,” he said.

Memphis Tiner, Miguel Lopez, Kimberlyn Garcia and Emily Goodwin, all second graders at Dora Schools, were all excited about being reunited with their friends.

Lopez, who said that he was especially eager to see his little cousin at school, was looking forward to physical education, “because it has a lot of games.”

Physical education and recess were what Garcia said she likes the most about returning to school.

“You get to play games, and you get to see your friends and have fun,” she said.

Goodwin, differing slightly from her peers, said that, in addition to P.E., she was looking forward to art class.

“You get to draw a lot of stuff. P.E. is very fun, because you get to run, and you get to play games,” she said.

Julianna Garcia, a fourth grader at Floyd Schools, was eager for school to start so that she could “learn more about math.”

Garcia, whose favorite subject is math, enjoys the first day of school, because “you can meet new people and some of your friends from the year before.”
