Child dies in Friona accident

Staff report

An 8-year-old Clovis boy died Thursday in an automobile accident south of Friona.

The accident happened at 7:55 a.m., 7.6 miles south of Friona on State Highway 214.

Parth Bhakta died at the scene, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Cpl. John Gonzalez.

Gonzalez said a Toyota Sienna was traveling eastbound when it failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign.

A 2016 Kenworth semi-tractor pulling a trailer then collided with the Toyota, careening past the center line, hitting a pole, and overturning.

The Toyota went into a ditch and hit a utility pole before coming to rest.

There were six occupants of the Toyota, including the deceased.

The driver of the semi, Mario Mena of Hereford, was transported to Parmer Medical Center in Friona, along with the other occupants of the Toyota who suffered injuries that were not life threatening, officials said.

Gonzalez said no criminal charges or citations had been issued, but the investigation is ongoing.
