Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Reader reaction — June 26

We asked our Facebook followers a series of questions throughout the week, with the caveat their answers may be used in the newspaper.

Monday is the first day of summer. What’s your favorite summer vacation memory?

• Laura Stephens Reid: Loved our family vacations with neighbors and friends (Pools and Murrays) to the Hamby cabin in Cowles, NM. Three days of heaven, only three days as my dad was a farmer and couldn’t leave any longer than three days. The only “vacation” we took other than to go to family reunions, which were fun too.

• Kayla Marie Erickson: Swimming and BBQ with my kids.

The last few months have seen a pair of homicides, a high speed chase and a hostage standoff. Do you feel less safe, or is this just a cyclical thing?

• Alicia Emily: I feel like it’s normal crime stuff just blown up because it’s “small town.” The other problem is the more people become afraid the more the criminals will over run the town. I’ve never seen so many paranoid people till we got stationed here. People should realize that in this day, you aren’t safe anywhere. Times have changed, time to adapt and overcome, stand your ground and become proactive.

• Janice Martinez: I feel safe and I think Clovis is a great place. We have our share of problems like any other city. I would look at the annual states, not a cluster of recent events.

• Brittany Patterson: My husband and I were just talking about this the other day. I hardly even feel safe in my own home anymore. I’m afraid to let my kids go outside and play because Lord knows there may be bullets flying from somewhere.

• Ashley Buchanan: I do not feel safe in Clovis. I was driving by 11th and Prince when the cops were out near the road with their guns drawn. People have children and the road was not blocked off. Little scary if you ask me.

• Lynn Claudio: Clovis has declined in safety rates as well as not having the confidence in our officers to keep us safe. We have a responsibility as a community to protect ourselves to a degree by being aware of our surroundings to keep ourselves safe. It’s everyone’s responsibility to be aware and help each other out. We need neighborhood watches to help us help each other.

• Mike Evarts: Everything here is fine. People tend to focus on the negative aspects of society for some reason. There is no civil unrest here, famine, mass deportation, or sectarian violence that is seen on a daily basis in other parts of the world. Is there room for improvement? Always. But it could be much, much worse.

In honor of Draggin’ Main, what’s your favorite story about cruising Main Street in Clovis?

• Laura Stephens Reid: Met my “future” husband there when I was 17 and he was 18. However, I didn’t like him then. Married him 12 years later. Also, a lot of memories that are also protected by my Fifth Amendment rights. I drove 20 miles one way to drag Main in Clovis.

• Wanda J. Leonard: It is where I met the love of my life. Married 40 years. Yeah.

• Jessie Rael: That is also where I met my wife, the love of my life, still together after 30 years. Traffic was bumper to bumper Friday and Saturday nights. It was the place too pull over and watch people talk to friends. It was an awesome time.

• Zandi Jacobs: I met my husband while cruising Main. We’ll be married 12 years this November.

• Adam N Amy Rodriguez: Public parking was always something going on when I was a kid .

• Amanda Brown: Met my husband there 14 years ago, Langdon Brown.

• Debi Herrin Speice: Way too many. That’s where we lived in the 70’s.

• Kristie Ann Buetow-Coffey: Met my hubby on Main Street.
