Lujan drops from county commission race

A candidate for the open District 4 seat on the Curry County Commission has announced she is withdrawing from the race.

Emily Vander Dussen — listed on the ballot as Emily Rose Lujan — will no longer seek the Democratic nomination in District 4.

Because she missed the April 5 deadline to withdraw, she will remain on the ballot.

County Elections Coordinator Amber Roberts said if Vander Dussen receives at least one vote, she will be the Democratic nominee until she withdraws as a general election candidate following the primaries. The deadline to do so is Sept. 6, nine weeks before the Nov. 8 general election.

Vander Dussen said Friday she wants to focus on advocacy for early childhood, and believes there are good candidates in the Republican primary to serve as commissioners.

Republican candidates for District 4 are Ben Smith, Steve Gershon and Donald Harrell.

Current District 4 Commissioner Wendell Bostwick is term-limited.

Road construction

The Curry County Road Department has scheduled a chip seal overlay for Tuesday and Wednesday for Curry Road 6 from U.S. 70 to Curry Road F.

Work will take place 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. The section of road will not be closed, but drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes. Residents are also asked for minimal use of the roads in the three to four hours following work to allow the materials to set in.
