Hounds' rally comes up short in Game 2 loss

Staff report

LAWTON, Okla. — Struggling much of day, Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team erupted with some long-ball power late against Cameron on Saturday.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as the Aggies scored in the bottom of the seventh to complete a 10-0, 7-6 Lone Star Conference sweep of the Greyhounds.

The teams, who had the start of the series pushed back a day because of weather, finish the series with another noon (MDT) twin bill today.

Trailing 6-3, catcher Kyra Sirag and shortstop Susannah Chandler hit back-to-back, one-out homers in the top of the seventh off Cameron ace Emily Wasinger (12-2), who was looking for a save after throwing a four-hit shutout in the opener, shortened to 4 1/2 innings by the eight-run rule.

With two out, senior left fielder Marleyna Pinon whacked a double to right field, and pinch-runner Mariah Zerr scored the tying run on a single to left field by Mariah Rodriguez.

The Aggies (22-9, 7-3 LSC) won it anyway in the bottom half when first baseman Sonora Zukerman singled leading off, moved around to third on a sacrifice and an infield out and scored on an error by Chandler.

Freshman right-hander Natasha Kissell (2-9) went the distance in the circle and deserved a bit of a better fate, with five of Cameron’s runs unearned as the result of four ENMU errors. Sirag added a double and a single in four at-bats to lead a 10-hit Greyhounds attack against three Aggies hurlers.

Left fielder Breezy McComas, who hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning of the nightcap for Cameron, also homered and went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs in the first-game rout. The first six Aggies reached base against ENMU starter Kiana Zerr (2-6), who failed to retire anyone before being lifted with the score already 4-0.

Five of Cameron’s eight hits in the game went for extra bases. Meantime, Wasinger did not strike out anyone and walked two hitters, throwing 67 pitches.
