Staff Writer[email protected]The Clovis Community Chorus has scheduled its annual spring concert next week at the First United Methodist Church sanctuary, 1501 N. Sycamore.
The concert is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
This is one of two concerts the choir has each year; the other will be around Christmas.
Virginia Morrison, an experienced music educator in Clovis, is directing the choir with accompaniment by James Golden, a pianist and organist at First United Methodist Church in Portales. Golden also directs school choirs at Portales High School.
The choir will be performing a mix of well-known and new arrangements, including: “Honor and Glory” by Bach and the Jamaican folk song, “Evenin’ Time.”
There will also be duets and several solo performances of early American songs and classical pieces.
“It’s a great experience to be able to sing so many varieties of music,” said Marsha Brandon, a soprano choir member.
“One of the things I really appreciate about this group of people is it’s a really diverse group,” Morrison said. “We have a minister, engineers, a doctor, and students.”
This diversity is not only seen in occupations, but also in age: the members range from early teens to more than 80.
The members devote their time on a voluntary basis, and there are no auditions.
The Clovis Community Chorus is a nonprofit organization supported by 28 businesses, according to Wayne Anderson, president of the board of directors.
Anderson said the choir purchases all of the music it sings.
Admission is free, and a reception — complete with homemade cookies — will follow.
“There’s a little something for everybody,” Morrison said.
