Angelo hammers Hounds

Staff report

PORTALES — Coming off two run-rule losses, Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team was positioned to try to salvage a split of Saturday’s Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Greyhound Field.

The Rams posted a 13-3, x-x sweep of the Greyhounds, with the series concluding in a 1 p.m. single game today.

Angelo State, though, was having none of it.

The Rams broke open a tie game with a five-run seventh to hand ENMU an 8-3 loss and take the first three of the four-game series, which ends with today’s 1 p.m. clash. The Rams won the first game, scheduled for nine innings, 13-3.

Angelo State (10-6, 3-0 LSC) opened the seventh with three singles against ENMU junior left-hander J’Daylin Jackson (2-2), and took the lead when Jackson threw wildly on designated hitter Jarryd Klemm’s infield hit to the mound. Tyler Coolbaugh followed with a two-run double off reliever Michael Holliday, and additional runs scored when ENMU turned a double play with the bases-loaded and catcher David Goggin followed with an RBI single.

The Rams jumped ahead on designated hitter Jarryd Klemm’s two-run double in the first.

ENMU third baseman Dylan Nault tries unsuccessfully to beat out a throw from Angelo State shortstop Paxton DeLaGarza to the stretching Tyler Coolbaugh at first base in the opening game Saturday’s Lone Star Conference doubleheader opener at Greyhound Field. Angelo State took both games of the twin bill 13-3 and 8-3 and will try for a four-game sweep in today’s 1 p.m. finale.

ENMU took the lead with a three-run, five-hit third off ASU’s Bryce Zak (4-0), including a bases-loaded walk to Charles Sandberg and a two-run single by first baseman Wesley Jordan. But after reloading the bases with no one out, Zak escaped by getting Keenan Dodd on strikes and inducing a 6-4-3 double-play grounder from freshman third baseman Paul Tapia.

Zak went six innings for the win, allowing 10 singles and three walks but striking out 11. Klemm led the Rams’ 16-hit attack, going 3-for-4, while five others had two hits apiece.

ENMU finished with 11 hits, including two each for designated hitter Dylan Nault, right fielder Justin Paul, shortstop Tregra Williams and Tapia.

Angelo State 13, ENMU 3 (1st game) — The Rams beat the Hounds by the identical score from Friday night’s series opener, and again ended the game in seven innings on the 10-run rule.

Angelo scored in every inning and chased ENMU starter Chris Miranda-Carr before anyone was retired in the second.

Third baseman Nathan Ruane led a 15-hit attack for the Rams, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Second baseman Sam Kohler drove in three runs with a pair of singles, and three other ASU players each had a pair of hits.

Rams starter Bryce Zak worked only one inning. The Hounds did all their scoring in the third off reliever Jayden Odell, getting a two-run single from left fielder Michael McNicholl and a run-scoring groundout from right fielder Justin Paul.

Kenton Schroter (2-0) took over in the fourth and worked the final four innings for ASU, allowing just two hits and striking out four.
