Sloan: Perfect, peaceful world a fantasy

“If tomorrow, everybody under the sun Was happy just to live as one No borders, no battles to be won But if tomorrow everybody was your friend Happiness would never end Lord, don’t you wish it was true.”

—John Fogerty

Please indulge me this one week to fantasize about creating my own sickeningly saccharine universe.

No children or adults would be abused or die from easily remedied diseases or malnutrition because of where they were born.

No one would be born with imperfections destroying chances of achieving their dreams — wondering what they had done to deserve such a fate.

Life’s tapestry would be stitched by people equally talented and attractive in different ways.

Diseases, accidents, droughts, storms, greed, depression, addiction, anger, crime, violence, arrogance, condescension, anger, jealousy, unfaithfulness, death would disappear.

No one would grow old and suffer incalculable misery and depression — living their final years alone in a nursing home as their reward for a lifetime of sacrifice for others.

After reaching their prime, everyone would re-live their lives in a never-ending cycle — learning from their mistakes.

Politicians would campaign on how to help humans everywhere — instead of how to deny, exclude and hate.

Everyone would be too smart to be a terrorist, and too empathetic to hurt others.

Religion’s golden rule would be respecting the uniqueness of others with no competing gods ordering believers to condemn or salvage nonbelievers.

Instead of asking for money and castigating sinners, preachers would role-model unconditional acceptance.

No one would be born into extreme wealth or poverty — with everyone working equally and sharing equally in Earth’s resources.

Strangers would gather daily to share nature’s bounty — surrounded by the soundtrack of children never exposed to predators or poverty.

Unpolluted gentle rains and snows, prism skies, mountains, waterfalls, full moons, starry nights, meteor fireworks and sunrises and sunsets beyond oceans’ incandescent horizons would paint nature’s canvas around the world.

Everyone would respect and value others’ contributions to a peaceful world we took for granted during the never-ending magic of childhood.

Don’t you wish it was true?
