County to discuss disaster declarations, horse stalls

Staff report

Curry County commissioners will talk about disaster declarations and horse stalls and tour the construction site for new Gidding Street offices when they meet at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Clovis-Carver Public Library’s North Annex.

The county’s supervisor and employee of the year will also be named at the Commission’s regular meeting, County Manager Lance Pyle said.

Two disaster declarations are on the agenda — one related to heavy rain last summer and another tied to the Christmas weekend blizzard.

The county will receive a $767,000 grant from state agencies if commissioners agree to kick in $256,000. That money will go to county road repairs and is expected to be approved along with 14 other items on the consent agenda.

Commissioners are also expected to begin the process of seeking funds to help in recovery from the winter storm nicknamed Goliath. A resolution declaring the county a disaster area would start that process, Pyle said.

A more contentious issue could be discussion on constructing a multi-purpose pavilion that could accommodate 300 temporary horse stalls for the Curry County Events Center.

The Events Center has some stalls now, but none are covered, Pyle said.

The agenda item calls for discussion “to proceed with contracting” to develop a design for a multi-purpose pavilion.

“Once we get what it costs, then we’ll see if the Commission wants to proceed,” Pyle said.

The agenda has 22 items on which action could be taken.

Following the meeting, commissioners will reconvene at 417 Gidding St. to review construction, which Pyle said is on track for April completion.

Pyle said an executive session item on the agenda “may not be necessary.”

The item does not stipulate the purpose for the proposed executive session.
