1970: Clovis Mayor Chick Taylor was unhappy with a recent decision by state Liquor Control Chief David Sierra and his quote made the front page of the Clovis News-Journal:

“I think this verifies the fact, about which we were highly suspicious, that there is hanky panky in the (state) capital in reference to who gets these licenses.”

City officials had rejected requests for two liquor licenses on Mabry Drive. Sierra overruled that decision because the city failed to file adequate public notice, Sierra claimed.

1960: Darwin M. Sprouls, a certified public accountant, announce he had moved his office to 516 Mitchell St. in Clovis.

The newspaper ad did not specify where Sprouls’ office had been previously located.

1940: A Portales woman had added airplane to her long list of travel modes.

Fannie Black, 90, said she had wanted to ride in every vehicle imaginable.

“She lives near the Portales municipal airport where students fly daily, and felt the desire to get her feet off the ground,” said Leon Jones, a Portales merchant who made Black’s flight dream come true on Christmas Day.

After her airplane trip, she listed other ways she’s traveled: ox carts, ox wagons, horse wagons, hacks (she did not specify if she referred to taxicabs or horses), buggies, automobiles and a steamboat.

Next up: She was planning to travel to California and ride on an ocean liner.
