Theater building purchased

STAFF REPORT

The Roosevelt County Community Development Corporation announced Tuesday that long-dormant building in downtown Portales will be opening once again.

The building, located on the corner of Avenue A and First Street, was once home to the Tower Twin movie theater, which closed in 2009 due to its air conditioning system failing.

According to Portales News-Tribune records, the original Tower Theatre burned in 1978 but was replaced with the current building later that year. Allen Theatres bought it in 1990 from United Artists and 10 years ago Tower Twin was closed for two to three years for remodeling.

The building has sat vacant since its last closure.

An RCCDC press release said Tuesday the building has been purchased by Max and June Merrick, owners of Ace Hardware on Avenue D, who “plan a mixed use to include retail.”

RCCDC President Randy Knudson said Wednesday the building cannot be used as a movie theater again, but the building reopening will rejuvenate downtown Portales even more.

“This redevelopment will complement the on-going efforts of downtown revitalization; generate jobs during construction and through its retail, and add quality of life to our community,” Knudson said in the press release.
