Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Notebook — Nov. 18

The Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce is encouraging Portales businesses to “turn the town red and black” this week.

That’s because the Portales Rams — Can you guess their team colors? — are hosting a playoff game Friday in their quest for the Class 4A high school football state championship.

The Rams, 10-0, have won four state football titles in school history — 2008, 1988, 1981 and 1979 — but they’ve never gone undefeated and won a New Mexico Activities Association crown.

Some fans are optimistic this is the year and the Chamber is doing its part to help promote the cause.

“We want to urge you to support the (Rams) in their quest for a 4A state championship by decorating and painting your store or office windows with the team colors,” a Chamber memo to members reads.

“If you have team flags, fly them all week as the weather allows and urge your staff to dress in red and black on Friday.”

Portales hosts St. Mike’s at 7 p.m. Friday at Blackwater Draw.

Predictions call for a red blackout with a chance for advancing in pursuit of perfection.
