Juveniles charged in pair of burglaries

Staff report

Two juveniles suspected of burglarizing a Clovis residence on Thursday have been arrested and charged in connection with two burglaries in the area, Clovis police announced on Monday.

As for the neighbor who fired a shot that hit a vehicle driven by one of the suspects: That investigation continues, officials said, but prosecutors are “leaning towards not charging her,” District Attorney Andrea Reeb said.

Clovis police say shots were reported fired about 7:20 a.m. Thursday in the 1300 block of Arciniega Drive.

Officers learned a neighbor feared she was “in danger” and fired a shot, perhaps accidentally, at the vehicle of a suspected burglar as it sped away from the scene.

About two hours later, police located two juvenile suspects in the 1100 block of Concord Road.

“During contact with the males, a firearm was recovered from the waistband of one of the males,” police said in a news release issued Monday.

Detectives took the youths into custody and recovered items that had allegedly been stolen from the residence in the 1300 block of Arciniega Drive, along with other items that did not belong to anyone in that residence, the release said.

The stolen items were recovered in the 1300 block of Concord Road, police Capt. Roman Romero said.

About 6 p.m. on Thursday, police responded to a second reported burglary, this time in the 1200 block of Arciniega Drive. Romero said the resident had “just returned home” and found items missing.

“The items released to law enforcement earlier in the day from the residence at 1300 Concord were identified as property stolen from this (second) burglary,” the news release said.

The juvenile males face charges that include aggravated burglary, unlawful possession of a handgun by a person less than 19, criminal damage to property, receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle and more.

Both were transported to the Curry County Juvenile Detention Center, where they remained on Monday.

Police have not identified the neighbor who fired the shot. Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Stover said last week that prosecutors were not pursuing charges against her based on information they had so far.

Reeb said Monday that Stover had not changed his mind, but the issue was “still undecided.”
