On this date ...

1980: District Court Judge Reuben Nieves of Clovis said he would allow cameras into his courtroom for a murder trial.

The Clovis News-Journal reported it was the first time in Curry County, and “possibly” the first time in New Mexico, a judge had agreed to allow cameras.

“I hope this type of proceeding becomes common place,” Nieves said.

1950: Oscar Cantwell, the Roosevelt County district field scout executive, was directing a school for the mothers of Cub Scouts at Portales’ Methodist church.

Four classes had been scheduled.

“Fathers were also invited to attend whenever possible,” the Clovis News-Journal reported.

It’s their business ...

1990: McDonald’s restaurants in Clovis and Portales were offering “real value,” according to their newspaper ads.

Customers could purchase sausage biscuits, hamburgers, French fries and cherry pies for 59 cents each.
