Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Editor's notebook — Sept. 27

Soles for souls: October, according to the Lighthouse Mission in Clovis, is “sole-saving month.”

The community shelter at 407 L. Casillas Blvd. is asking for donations of gently used or new shoes, all sizes and styles, throughout the month.

This is the eighth annual shoe drive, according to Lighthouse Administrative Assistant Geri Gomez.

Remembering Yogi: One of baseball’s more colorful characters died Tuesday at age 90.

Yogi Berra was a Hall of Fame player, but perhaps better known for his wit and memorable quotes.

While Yogi himself said he “never said half the things I said,” here are some lesser-known favorites attributed to him on brainyquote.com:

• “I wish I had an answer to that because I’m tired of answering that question.”

• “I never blame myself when I’m not hitting. I just blame the bat and if it keeps up, I change bats.”

• “If people don’t want to come to the ballpark, how are you going to stop them?”
