Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Editor's notebook — Sept. 25

Senator’s staff visiting: Staff representing U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-New Mexico, are in Clovis and Portales today.

A news release from Heinrich said they will “be on hand to assist residents who have questions regarding Social Security benefits, Medicare, immigration, veterans benefits, student loans, and other federal programs.”

In Clovis, Heinrich staff will be at Clovis Community College, Room 102, from 11 a.m. to noon today.

In Portales, they’re at Portales City Hall from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Quotable: Here’s what U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-New Mexico, had to say about the Pope’s visit to Washington, D.C.:

“Pope Francis used his address in part to challenge Congress to work together for the nation — and to use our power responsibly in the world.

“This message could not be more timely as we struggle to address immigration, confront deep poverty internationally and here in the United States, and respond to violent conflicts around the world that have spurred the most severe refugee crisis since World War II.

“He urged us to be guided by the simplest and most profound of rules: to do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”
