ENMU women's team comes out on top at College Daze Rodeo

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s rodeo team came out on top at the 50th annual ENMU College Daze Rodeo this past weekend.

One competitor, Tawny Barry, winning goat tying and Kacey Clark placing second in breakaway roping according to ENMU rodeo Coach Albert Flynn.

The ENMU men’s rodeo team finished fifth overall at the event.

Flynn also said the rodeo had excellent attendance.

The ENMU rodeo arena looked a little different this year with the bucking shutes moved from the side to the east end.

“This (move) shortened the arena but helped speed up the rodeo,” said Flynn.

Bailey Harwell, ENMU barrel racer, was winning the barrel race competition Thursday but fell in the rankings as the rodeo went on.

“The rodeo was really good. I finally have my good horse back, and I missed the short go by a few slots. I will get them at the next rodeo in Alpine,” said Harwell.

Kasey Clark finished second in breakaway roping overall.

“You have to catch the calf clean around the neck, make sure to give the calf a head start (it’s a 10-second penalty if you do not), and the rope breaks off clean from the saddle horn. When it does that, you get your time,” said Clark.

“The rodeo went pretty good,” he added.

South Dakota native Tawny Barry won the goat tying competition overall and in the short round.

Barry grew up around rodeo and is in her first year at ENMU.

“I have grown up doing it (rodeo). Since I was old enough to pick up a rope or ride a horse,” said Barry.

ENMU men’s rodeo students Levi and Eli Lord placed first in the average and short round for team roping and fourth in the long round.

“It’s really good to start out having success like that. This was our third year trying to rope together, said Levi Lord of he and his brother. “We have roped at the professional level together but never in high school or college rodeo.”

The brothers are ready to go to Alpine, Texas, this weekend to compete once again.

“We rope everyday and practice. He’s going to do his job, and I will try to do mine. Hopefully we will do as good there as we did this weekend,” said Levi.
