ENMU receiver Adrian Horton is pulled out of bounds by Adams State defensive back Dejon Scott just short of the pylon during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game at Alamosa, Colo. Horton’s 16-yard reception set up the Greyhounds’ final touchdown, a 1-yard run by Jeremy Doucette, in a 44-30 victory. The Hounds will try to make it 3-0 when they face Midwestern State in the teams’ 10:30 a.m. (MDT) Lone Star Conference opener today, part of the LSC Football Festival at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Today only one of them will stay perfect as the teams meet in the first of three games in the 2015 Lone Star Football Festival at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Kickoff is set for 10:30 a.m. (MDT).
To make sure the Greyhounds are ready for such an early game, coach Josh Lynn had the team show up for practice at 6 a.m. every day this week.
“It’s still a little dark when we start,” Lynn said. “But we need to make sure the guys can make their 8 o’clock classes.”
ENMU left on Friday morning and had a walk-through after arriving at AT&T Stadium. It’s the second year in a row the teams have met in the Festival.
Key Mustangs on defense: The Greyhounds’ offense will have to know where safety Tari Jones and inside linebacker Daniel Laudermilk are on the field.
“Jones is the best safety in our league,” Lynn said. “He’s downhill and extremely physical. Laudermilk is a three-year starter, meaning he’s seen our option (offense) a lot.”
Key Mustangs on offense: Vincent Johnson leads the Mustangs with 84 rushing yards on 18 attempts but no touchdowns. The team’s two rushing touchdowns belong to Hagen Hutchinson and Quade Coward.
Lynn said the Mustangs rotate their quarterbacks and he expects Hutchinson to start this time.
Hutchinson has gone 25-for-42 for 274 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions this season. He’s run the ball 15 times for 79 yards.
The leading receivers for the Mustangs are Terrence Smith and Statron Jones. Smith has eight catches for 108 yard, while Jones has seven receptions for 86 yards and one touchdown.
Blueprint for ENMU victory: Once again, it’s run the ball. Last week, Colorado Mesa ran it 54 times for 207 yards against the Mustangs, and it took overtime for Midwestern State to win the game. ENMU has rushed the ball 133 times for 725 yards and 10 touchdowns in its two victories, putting up 84 total points.
