Ibrahim Maiga picks off a pass at the Greyhound 4 to squelch Adams State’s final drive of the second quarter Friday night.

In a game where both teams were over 500 yards of total offense, the Hounds put four players over 60 yards rushing in the contest, led by senior D’Maujeric Tucker’s 102 yards on just 10 carries. Clovis High grad Kamal Cass added 94 yards on 13 totes, including a 16-yard run which tied the score 14-14 late in the first quarter.

Adams State scored on its first two possessions for a 14-point lead in the first five minutes. The Hounds responded with a 13-play, 91-yard drive that ended in a 4-yard TD run by junior fullback Silas Jefferson.

A fumble recovery by junior linebacker Fe’ao Vunipola at the ASU 20 set up Cass’ tying score.

The Hounds finally took their first lead early in the third quarter on Doucette’s second TD run, from two yards out, which made it 27-21 and capped an eight-play, 75-yard march.

Leading just 27-24, Horton’s long TD reception from Buurma opened a 10-point margin. Doucette added a 1-yard run with 9:28 to go and Timothy Callahan extended the lead to 44-24 with a 36-yard field goal with just over three minutes left.

Quarterback Auston Hillman threw for 272 yards and two scores for the Grizzlies, while receiver James Holtrop caught 11 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.

ENMU’s defense, though, sacked Hillman three times, including two for 12 yards by senior linebacker Keylon Hollis. Vunipola and junior defensive back De’Aundre Sanders tied for the team lead with nine tackles apiece.

ENMU returns to action on Saturday in the Lone Star Conference Football Festival at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, facing Midwestern State in the first of three games that day at 10:30 a.m. (MDT).
