Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Fifty years ago today
• Your Allsup 7-11 stores were encouraging football fans to “pick up your hole-in-one donuts” before the game.
• Burger Chef offered five cheeseburgers for 89 cents.
• Area grocery stores offered double green stamps on Wednesdays. A jumbo box of Dash detergent sold for $1.99. A 2-pound package of hamburger patties was 89 cents.
• You could buy three pair of pull-on waterproof baby pants for 88 cents.
• And 21-inch console color television sets sold for $449. One “handsome set” advertised in the newspaper made “flesh-tones more life-like,” featured a “contemporary walnut cabinet” and had dual 6-inch speakers for static-free sound.
Optimistic people
Stephen Caron is working to “restart” Clovis’ Sunrise Optimist Club.
The group, about 30 strong in the 1980s, has “about six” members now, Caron said. He’s looking for new optimists interested in oratorical contests, bike-safety promotions and other community-service projects.
They plan to meet at 8 a.m. each Thursday at MiCocina Restaurant, 1301 Mabry Drive, in Clovis.
