Yolanda Romero is known around town for her singing and cake decorating.

Romero is the first of her five siblings to graduate college, getting her degree in food and nutrition services with a minor in business administration from New Mexico State University.

She is known locally for her beautiful singing voice, and you will find her singing at retirements, weddings, community events and more. Romero doesn’t do it for profit, but because she wants to share her God-given gift.

“I sing every Sunday at the Cannon Chapel,” she said. “I sing to give.”

Romero is currently a contract administrator at Cannon Air Force Base.

When you were a kid, what did you think you’d be doing as an adult?

When I was a kid, I just wanted to be happy. I never focused on what I was going to be. I always wanted to do things that made me happy whether I was riding a bike or whatever.

What’s your favorite part about your job?

Helping people. I help customers with their purchasing to meet their missions. No matter the case, I enjoy helping my customers achieve their goals.

What don’t you like about your job?

The paperwork. It’s a little bit tedious sometimes because there are so many steps but it’s all good.

What’s your idea of a perfect day?

It’s spending time with my family. All my kids are getting older and have heir own things going on, so I look forward to Sundays when I can concentrate on them. That’s a perfect day for me.

What is your theme song?

“I Will Survive.”

What is your favorite TV show past and present?

Lately it’s been “Empire.” I like the singing and the drama.

What is your greatest individual accomplishment?

One of my personal goals that I have accomplished is losing over 100 pounds. I had gastric sleeve surgery in December, and I have been doing Zumba consistently for the past two years

Who’s your favorite entertainer?

Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. My son (Estevan) is amazing, too. He’s so talented, and I hope he hits the big time.

Who’s invited to your fantasy dinner party and why?

Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. I’d love to ask them both a lot of questions about their lives. Mohammed Ali, (because) he was a passionate fighter and accomplished so much. Jesus Christ, (who is) my strength and my rock, and my dad because we didn’t have a close relationship. I’d like to have the chance to make that connection. I’d like my mom to be there and my family.

What do you envision your life being like in 10 years?

I’ll be retired hopefully, drinking a margarita on the beach. But seriously, I pray my kids become who they want to become. I will be there to support them.
