ENMU tabbed for fourth in LSC women's soccer

Staff report RICHARDSON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University was picked for fourth place in the Lone Star Conference women’s preseason soccer poll this week, while both ENMU cross country squads have been tabbed for third place in rankings.

Angelo State finished with 82 points and eight of 15 first-place votes in the six-team women’s soccer poll to edge defending champion Texas A&M Commerce, which had 80 points and collected the remaining seven first-place votes. Midwestern State (48) nipped ENMU (44) for third place, followed by West Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Kingsville.

League teams begin play in early September and will play the other five home-and-home for 10 conference matches. The regular-season champion will host the conference tournament from Nov. 5-8.

ASU took two of the three preseason individual awards, with senior forward-midfielder Sierra Anderson named offensive player of the year and Rambelles junior defender Ashley Exford the defensive player of the year. Midwestern State sophomore Courtney Burnett was chosen the goalkeeper of the year.

In cross country, West Texas A&M was chosen to win both men’s and women’s championships in the seven-team circuits. The two-time defending LSC champion WT men garnered 19 of 20 first-place votes and 139 points, while Tarleton State had the other first-place tally and 104 points and ENMU followed with 93 points.

For the women, the Lady Buffs had 12 first-place votes and 126 points to nip defending champion Midwestern State, with eight first-place selections and 121 points. ENMU followed with 94 points.

The regular-season schedule for cross country begins on the final weekend of August. The LSC meet is scheduled for Oct. 26, to be hosted by Tarleton State at Stephenville, Texas.
