Portales moisture totals double the norm

Portales has seen more rain in May than in the three previous months combined, records from National Weather Service show.

Through Friday, NWS statistics show Portales has received 2.7 inches of rain this month. The city saw just 2.24 inches from February through April.

For the year, Portales has received 6.83 inches of moisture, about double the normal amount of moisture for the first 4 1/2 months of the year.

Meanwhile in Clovis, that city is on pace to set a record for rainfall in the month.

With 1.43 inches recorded in the past week, Clovis has seen 6.87 inches so far this month.

The Clovis record for rainfall in May is 11.87 inches set in 1941, which was also the wettest year in Clovis history, according to data provided by the National Weather Service.

So far this year, Clovis has recorded 9.96 inches of moisture:

On average, May is the region’s fifth-wettest month, averaging about 2 inches of moisture. August (2.9 inches) is the area’s wettest month on average, followed by June (2.5), July (2.3), and September (2.1), NWS statistics show.

Portales averages about 17 inches of moisture per year.

• The high temperature last week was 81 degrees on Thursday.

• The low temperature last week was 401 degrees on Sunday.

• This week’s forecast calls for high temperatures in the mid-70s to low-80s all week with chances of rain on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The best chance of rain appears to be Tuesday.
