Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Clovis High School alumni, staff, family and friends inducted six Hall of Honor award winners at the fifth annual Purple Pride Banquet on Saturday at the Clovis Civic Center.
Clovis Education Foundation President Ken Merritt served as the master of ceremonies at the event, which also featured the CHS Air Force Jr. ROTC cadets presentation of the colors, a silent auction, a live band called “Top Cats in the House,” and alumni from the classes of the 1940s through the 2000s.
G.C. Ross won the Top Cat Award for making a significant contribution to the Clovis school system.
“I was surprised, humbled and honored to be a “Top Cat,’” Ross said. “Clovis schools has been a big part of our lives for the past 50 years. ... I am very proud to have been a member of the staff and now a member of the foundation.”
“I think we have the best school system in the state of New Mexico,” Ross added.
William Price Hale and Sue Barnett Hale from the class of 1951, and Bret McCasland from the class of 1980 won the award for government and public service.
“I am overwhelmed and very honored,” McCasland said.
Ernest S. Marsh, from the class of 1920, won the business and industry award. Representatives from the railroad attended to accept the award for the Marsh family.
Chuck Glikas, from the class of 1973, won the sports and entertainment award.
“I felt honored, it was nice of them to select me,” Glikas said. “It’s a nice honor, and I am thankful.”
Glikas’ advice to Clovis High School students is to “work hard.”
“Put your effort into everything that you really want to be and do and work hard at it — If you do, you will get somewhere,” Glikas said.
