Hartsfield: Some things, even favorites, should be retired

Normally I don’t feel compelled to talk about my colleagues and their style choices nor am I ever inclined to give any one of them fashion tips. Because my philosophy has always been: To each his own in all areas of personal choice.

I appreciate good fashion when I see it but I don’t generally have expectations from others. However, a dear, sweet and very comical colleague of mine practically had the entire advertising department rolling on the floor with laughter.

Why? It was her shoes.

Her shoes were completely hollowed out on one side of the outer sole. To top that off, when she flipped them over to show us, there were holes going into the insoles.

One other colleague joked and said she should walk knock-kneed so that she could start wearing down the inner part of the outer soles. Another suggested we all form a relief fund for her shoes.

Yes, the jokes were all in good fun but her shoes told their own story. They were tired and worn ragged. I think for a moment I couldn’t speak and then all I could do was laugh. I had never seen anything like it.

That she was still proud to wear them was a rarity in itself that rendered me speechless. She said her husband keeps trying to pressure her to replace them but she’d tell him they’re comfortable and that she doesn’t need new shoes. Of course, you know what the rest of us were thinking.

Who’d of thought there actually exists a woman in society who refuses the offer of getting a new pair of shoes from her husband?

But I must say she was definitely a good sport about all the teasing she got from all of us. Maybe, after this, she’ll finally decide to retire them.
