1970: John Liston’s five hogs were killed under the supervision of public health officials, who suspected they had mercury poisoning. A Curry County sheriff’s deputy shot the animals and then they were tossed in a grave at the Clovis city dump. The Clovis News-Journal reported some of the hogs were “still kicking” when they were buried. Liston said three of the animals were still alive when they were buried. “I hope the humane society hears about this,” he said as he watched the shootings. Liston claimed the hogs were never tested for disease, only photographed by health officials.

1950: A Curry County jury acquitted Hobbs Mayor J. Paul Heard of charges he received a $1,000 bribe to protect gamblers’ interests. L.S. Booker had testified he gave Heard 10 $100 bills for “protection” from police at the Labor Club in Hobbs. Heard denied taking any money. Jurors deliberated for two hours, 38 minutes.

1948: Three Dallas men were accused of stealing a car in Dallas and wrecking it in Clovis. The men posed for a newspaper photo with the law officers who arrested them.

1950: “Feverish oil leasing activity” was continuing at Elida, where even town lots were going for $35 an acre, The Portales Daily News reported. Major oil companies had shown interest in large acreages north and south of Elida, but no agreements had been reached, the newspaper reported. “The only actual drilling operations in the county now are two wildcats by independent prospectors,” the paper reported.
