Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Jack Frost visited the eastern plains of New Mexico on Sunday, and the snow didn’t stop falling until Monday evening.
Meteorologist Brian Guyer, from the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, said Portales reported one inch of snow accumulation as of Monday afternoon.
Accumulations around Clovis ranged from 3/10 of an inch to 1 1/2 inches, said officials at the New Mexico National Weather Service in Albuquerque. The area stayed under winter weather advisory until 4 p.m. Monday afternoon.
Forecasters say today should be free of moisture, with temperatures in the low 40s, warming into the 50s by Wednesday.
According to Frank Blackburn, a former county commissioner and local farmer, Clovis received around an inch of snow.
“There was quite a bit of sleet with it,” Blackburn said Monday evening. “It don’t hurt us, it’s just cold, and it’s gonna be short-lived.”
Blackburn said he worked in his shop Monday instead of out in the field.
“There’s heat in the shop,” he said. “It makes a difference.”
Fort Sumner resident Juan Chavez said his community saw between 4 and 6 inches of snow.
“I didn’t have to get around too much,” Chavez said. “They cleared the roads early. It was a safe day. No accidents or anything in the area.”
Areas in the northern part of the state received upwards of 20 inches. The chart-topper, officials said Monday, was Enchanted Forest, which received 2 feet of snow. Red River Ski Resort reported 22 inches, while the town itself saw up to 17 inches.
