1975: Two fugitives, the last of seven men who escaped from the Curry County jail earlier in the week, were captured in a closet in a home in Lubbock. Both were unarmed and offered no resistance. The other five escapees had been captured within 24 hours of the jailbreak.
1964: Col. P.J. Markham, base commander at Cannon Air Force Base, said an investigation into alleged discriminatory hiring practices at the base was complete. Investigators found “without a doubt” that no discrimination in hiring existed, he said. “The investigation was thorough and complete in every possible facet,” Markham said.
1961: Erline Pickard, 22, of 1111 S. Prince, was among the first in Clovis to take advantage of free chest X-rays provided by the state health department. The mobile X-ray unit was parked on the Curry County Courthouse grounds.
Moon goal too lofty …
1964: New Mexico Sen. Clinton P. Anderson, considered the Senate’s top authority on space, questioned the advisability of proceeding with an all-out effort to land a man on the moon this decade. He said NASA scientists had warned that shielding men from radiation on a trip to the moon “is not possible within the time and weight limitations of the (Apollo) project.”

1951: The New Mexico Grain and Feed Dealers Association chose Portales for the site of its mid-year convention. The association’s board of directors included Clarence Worley of Portales, Austin Brooks of Clovis and K.L. Langley of Tucumcari. Worley built 12 Worley Mills feed-grinding mills in New Mexico and Texas, most in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s..
