CANYON, Texas — The Canyon Eagles used a strong second quarter to take control on Tuesday night en route to a 58-46 victory over Clovis High’s boys.
Canyon (5-8) used a balanced attack with four players finishing in double figures. Meantime, junior forward Roland Chavez poured in a career-best 20 points in defeat for the Cats (4-9), who suffered their fourth loss in a row.
“Roland’s starting to get going for us,” CHS coach Scott Robinson said. “We’re getting him the ball, and he’s starting to finish around the basket.”
The Eagles (5-8) extended a three-point lead to 10 by outscoring Clovis 18-11 in the second period.
“The difference in the first half was the offensive rebounding,” CHS boys coach Scott Robinson said. “They did a really good job of getting opportunities on putbacks, especially in the second quarter.”
The teams played on relatively even terms the rest of the way.
“We cut it to nine at one point, but then we gave up a three-point play,” Robinson said. “Every time we’d start to make a little run, we’d have a breakdown on defense and give up a layup.”
The Cats will make up Saturday’s postponement against Las Cruces High at The Rock in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff on Monday. That, though, will give them four games in five nights, starting with Friday’s home contest against Lovington.
They visit Roswell High on Saturday and host Roswell Goddard next Tuesday.
“We’re going to have to buckle down and focus on getting some of these things fixed,” Robinson said.
