Region wakes up to ice, snow

Staff reports

Eastern New Mexico remained under a winter storm warning this morning until 11 a.m.

KVII-TV weather stations were reporting 5.5 inches of snow fell overnight in Clovis and Farwell, while Portales received 4 inches.

The National Weather Service is reporting snow up to 8 inches around the region with roads icy and snow packed and visibility low. Travel is being discouraged.

Snow is expected to continue through most of the morning, tapering off between 10 a.m. and noon, NWS reports.

New Mexico Department of Transportation is reporting "severe driving conditions" on state roads 469 and 209 north of Clovis. All other roads in eastern New Mexico are classified as seeing "difficult driving conditions."

No area highways are closed as of 6:30 a.m. today, but travel is being discouraged.

"Severe" driving conditions means roads are snow packed and icy with poor visibility.
