Simplest things bring back memories

Local columnist

The simplest little action, a familiar song or a fragrance, one certain phrase. That's all it takes to bring wonderful memories rushing to the forefront of my mind.

Every week I find myself reaching down to the carpet to pick up a little piece of grass or a stray thread. And every single time I remember my Nana doing just the same.

For some reason I always thought she should just wait and vacuum it up. I don't know why it's such a strong memory, but I'm glad it is.

The grand aroma of a roast cooking will always take me right back through my Grandma's door on a Sunday afternoon.

I hear the phrase “Time will tell,” and I'm transported to the living room where Granddad sits in his blue chair making that same proclamation.

New carpet, and that wonderful scent as the seams are glued together with the hot iron. That will forever take me to the back of the furniture store where I played on the carpet rolls, and Granddad called me a little hoodlum.

My grandparents were all special treasures. They blessed my life always, but never more than Christmastime. I cherish the memories this week.
