LADY RAMS DOWN ROBERTSON: Portales turned a close game into a blowout in the third quarter, and left West Las Vegas Saturday with a 65-36 victory.

Junior Kambrey Blakey had a double-double 19 points and 10 rebounds, as Portales (5-1) won.

Portales led throughout, but blew the game open with a 30-5 run that bridged the second and third quarters.

“Basically, we locked down on defense and were in better position,” second-year Portales coach Wade Fraze said. “We got our hands in the passing lane, which caused them some problems. We took better care of the ball, also.”

The Rams had 12 turnovers on the day, with just four in the second half. Junior guard Sheraya Cox added an all-around effort with 15 points, six assists and eight of Portales’ 23 steals.

“That was probably her best game of the year. She was outstanding in every category. But it was a team effort. Without us all playing defense, she doesn’t get some of those steals.”

Nobody reached double figures for the Lady Dons (6-3), who got six from Celeste Trujillo and five from four other players. Portales is off for this week for the Christmas holiday, and will return to action Dec. 29 against Lubbock Monterey in the Caprock Tournament.

TIGERS END LOSING STREAK:The Elida Tigers got back to their winning ways Saturday dominating Mountainair in a 64-35 win.

The Tigers got balanced scoring as nine players scored, led by Madison Haley’s 12 points. Taylor Epps added 11.

Tigers coach J.D. Isler was proud of his team for bouncing back and ending a two game losing streak.

“I thought we played well defensively in the first quarter, holding them to six points,” Isler said. “That set the tone and we also had a good 3rd quarter. We cut down on our turnovers and shot OK from the line. We still have work to do but I’m proud.”
