Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Pages Past — Dec. 19

On this date …

1960: Clovis put four on the Class AA all-state football team announced by United Press International — halfback Jimmy Reynolds, end Jim Gee, tackle Richard Ybarra and center Ronnie Bowman. Portales’ Richard James was named to the Class A team as a back. Melrose had four on the Class C team — end Jim Brittain, tackle Harley Smith, guard Billy Carter and back David Foutz.

1953: State Police Officer Butch Swoboda pulled over a speeder only to learn it was a mother rushing her 14-month-old daughter to the Clovis Memorial Hospital. The officer gave escort to the hospital, then carried the child into the emergency room. Paulette Dollar of Farwell needed five stitches in a badly cut finger, which her 3-year-old brother had slammed in a car door.

1935: Area residents felt the earth move under their feet. The only damage reported in Clovis was to a tile wall at the Farmers Marketing Association at 209 Mitchell and a crack in the wallpaper at Grady Allen’s home at 406 E. Fourth St. But multiple residents reported what the newspaper said were “earth shocks.” E.A. Embry, who was visiting Clovis from Roswell, said he was standing on the street and felt two quakes about two minutes apart. “The first one gave me a sort of pushing sensation,” he said. “But the second one was just sort of a flirt.”

Sounds fishy …

1977: Salty Sea World, at 1520 Mitchell Suite 4, had just received a new shipment of saltwater and tropical fish. The store’s hours were 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, “usually,” according to a newspaper ad.

Newsworthy …

1960: The Portales News-Tribune was offering a 2-pound box of candy for a renewed subscription to the paper. Subscription rates were $7 per year by mail or 30 cents per week if delivered by carrier in Portales.
