Three Cats named to North-South squad

More than a dozen Curry and De Baca county high school seniors have been selected to one of three North-South All-Star football teams, according to releases from the New Mexico Coaches Association.

The senior-only games include various combinations of the seven classes of football — six-man, eight-man, and classes 2A through 6A.

All three games will be played at Community Stadium in Albuquerque. All local selections are on their respective South teams.

Clovis defensive end Jordan Holguin was one of three Wildcats selected to play in the Class 5A/6A North-South All-Star Game, set for July in Albuquerque. He was joined on the roster by tackle Tabor Stanfield and defensive back Kaine Bender.

The Clovis Wildcats had three players selected to the Class 5A/6A game, scheduled for 7 p.m. July 29 — defensive back Kaine Bender, defensive end Jordan Holguin and tackle Tabor Stanfield.

In total, District 4-6A had nine players selected, with four selections for Hobbs and one each for Carlsbad and Alamogordo.

Texico center Tanner Pelfrey was named to the Class 3A/4A team, which plays 7 p.m. June 5. He will have three teammates — defensive back Matt Martinez, defensive lineman Paul Conrow and receiver John Young — from Portales.

Fort Sumner had seven players on the six-man/eight-man/Class 2A team, which will play 7 p.m. June 6 — guard Robert Guerra, linebackers Brett Marshall and Charley Rodriguez, tackles Jorome Tompkins, Jesus Soto and Kevin Hughes and tight end Garrett Hisel.

Melrose had two selections to the team, guard Payson Moore and running back Boone Roberts.

The association is accepting votes from coaches through Friday for the all-state football teams. There is one team per class, and football players from grades 8-12 are eligible.
